Character information.
● Character name: Ubbe Ragnarsson
● Canon: Vikings
● Canon point: 5x10
● Age: 23-25 range
● Canon background: wiki
● Abilities: Ubbe is an excellent archer, swordsmans and crazy handler.
● Strengths.: Ubbe's greatest strength is his calm nature. Where his brothers are prone to anger and quick to violence he is generally the center of the storm for them. He anchors his family together in the absence of true parental figures in their lives. Ragnar left them before Ivar had even been old enough to really know his father -- even if Aslaug, their mother, would have allowed him very close. He watches out for Ivar and tried when they were children to keep him safe. His calm nature also drew him to offer peace to the Saxons, which was a bold and risky call. It almost succeeded.
Additionally, Ubbe is very compassionate. While this might make him a good man by normal standards it makes for a terrible Viking. He was always trying to jostle his brothers into treating slave women like they were human and that they were to be respected and treated well despite status. He is very much like his father where he has a tendency to be kind to those he can and to try and lessen the burden on other's. Even though his youngest brother, Ivar, is very difficult and often cruel Ubbe is always seen to be affectionate and understanding of Ivar even when he is angry. He's gentle and kind and probably more close to a father to his brother's than their father really was.
Thirdly, Ubbe has a deep sense of honor. This is reflected in how he treats those below him (ex: slaves being respected), his attempt to make his wife happy and his ability to make honest agreements and not sway from his position. He fights for what he believes in. When they are in England, Ubbe believes that they should try to make peace to stop the bloodshed and also to be able to reclaim land that should be rightfully theirs without further fighting (another way that he is very much not a good Viking). This ends in the Saxons breaking the parlay and beating Ubbe and Hvitserk before they are returned. His honor also extends to once he joins Lagertha's side he does not waver even if it meant being pitted against Hvitserk and Ivar.
● Weaknesses: Ubbe's most apparent weakness is an ability to show confidence. He tends to have the right idea and tries to do what he believes is right but he often is not able to persuade others to his cause or make a good case. He often backs down to his younger brothers and concedes to their will. He has to be pushed to an extreme moral dilemma with Ivar to finally make a stand and part ways with him.
Another weakness Ubbe has is that he is not a good Viking. He is soft-hearted, compassionate and kind. These might be a strength in other cultures but in his own it was a weakness. While he should have been the rightful king of Kattegat when his mother was killed he lacked the drive and ambition or even need for revenge to fight Lagertha to take it. He cautions his brothers against war to keep them from being pitted against their half-brother Bjorn who none of them really want to fight and rightfully respect and fear. His thoughtfulness and lack of bloodlust makes him look weak to others, especially his own brother.
Lastly, Ubbe's passivity is often a bane for him. He is very calm and calculated in how he makes decisions but he is prone to pushing decisions off and instead of following his instinct for a calm path he is too passive to stop those who are more intent on pursuing a rasher course of action. The deal with the Saxons is example of this. He is quite passive with Ivar in arguing for his belief that they should attempt to make peace. Ivar does not respect Ubbe's ideas and Ubbe instead of pressing his place as the older brother relents and gives Ivar his way. However, he does not completely let go of the idea which is where he ends up humiliated after going behind Ivar's back to the Saxons only to come back beaten.
● Nightmares:
Ubbe's biggest nightmares have to do with family as he's extremely family oriented. In canon, his family is torn apart by a civil war and two of his brothers are on the other side of the war. Ubbe's worst nightmare is that his family is fractured forever. Secondly, he fears having to kill one of his brothers. Being that they are in war with each other, having to kill one in battle is always a possibility. Though, by his canon point he has faced Hvitserk in battle and chosen not to kill him.
I think a less quantifiable nightmare that Ubbe has is not being able to protect and take care of those he loves. He doesn't have a lot of ambition or bloodlust like his brothers do but he has a deep-rooted sense of compassion and empathy. Ubbe fears his brothers dying of their own folly and he has no way to stop it or protect them from themselves because of the way that their family has been torn in two. Already, Ubbe has failed to keep Ivar from killing one of their brothers and he holds himself responsible for that more than he does Ivar and I think to feel that over and over again is one of the worst things he could imagine.
